SSC-RdC Conducts Faculty In-Service Training

News

RELOAD … REFRESH … REFINE … These three words serve as the guiding principle of the five-day In-Service Training  for Tertiary Level Faculty of San Sebastian College Recoletos de Cavite (SSC-RDC) held at Saint Thomas of Villanova Library Main Campus from May 29 to June 4.

True to its Catholic foundations, the training was preceded by a Eucharistic Celebration held at the Main Campus Chapel officiated by Rev. Fr. Constituto A. Palomar, OAR who imparted inspiring words to the faculty and staff of SSC-RdC. After the mass, participants registered in the library and the training began.

RELOAD

This first objective of the in-service training gave all the participants the opportunity to “reload” new trends in the academe, keeping them abreast with the current practices in the field of teaching and learning.

Day 1

On the first day of the training, Rev. Fr. Constituto A. Palomar, OAR, College President, welcomed everyone through his opening remarks. It was followed by Dr. Emma D. Chico’s introduction of the Resource Speakers of the day.

Rev. Fr. Emilio P. Jaruda, OAR, PhD, introduced and discussed the history of the development of the Program Intended Learning Outcome (PILO) and the Curriculum Intended Learning Outcome (CILO). He also shared the vision to offer uniform and standardized curricular offerings in all Recoletos Institutions all over the country.

The next speaker, Ms. Juvy B. Dela Rosa, MArEXA, shared her knowledge on Outcome-Based Education (OBE), a student-centered education reform model that focuses on student performance that requires the learners to demonstrate the required skills and content that they have learned. The goal is to make learning relevant to their needs and the needs of the industry where they would be employed after completing their studies.

The afternoon of Day 1 was designated for the workshop as each college department tried to come up with their respective PILO’s and CILO’s, presented before the first day of the training ended.

DAY 2

For the second day, Ms.  Rosalita P. Samoy, MBA, Dean of College of Accountancy, Business Administration & Hospitality Management, introduced the resource speaker - Ms. Maria Soledad T. Tubay, MBA, SSC-RdC Director of Research.

Ms. Tubay focused her discussion on current Test and Measurement practice prescribed for the new K to 12 curriculum, which is also more aligned with the OBE. This assessment is divided into Knowledge 15%, Process or Skills 25%, 30% Understanding and 30% Performances/Products.

Again, the afternoon was spent for the workshop, wherein the participants were divided into subject areas and were tasked to come up with an evaluation instrument based on intended learning outcome about a specific topic. Each course presented their completed output by the end of the second-day training.

REFRESH

This second objective of the in-service training was achieved during the third and fourth day when the attending faculty was able to “refresh” their existing teaching practices and update them with modern strategies and techniques.

Days 3 – 4

Ms. Marcial R. Batiancila, RL, MS,IMDLL introduced the Guest Speaker for the next two days - Dr. Rogel Limpiada, a professor at Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation.

Dr. Limpiada afforded the participants an in-depth perspective on outcome-based education and how it can be utilized in daily instruction.  He explained that at the heart of OBE lies learner-centeredness, which entails experiential learning centered on process rather than product with specified outcomes identified as the learning assessment instrument. He further illustrated that in an OBE classroom time, content, and teaching technique will be altered to fit the needs of each student and the teacher's role in the classroom will become that of a coach. The instructor's goal then is to move each child towards pre-determined outcomes rather than attempting to transmit the content of the course in a scholarly fashion.

Towards the end of the two-day training, the faculty gained a clearer picture of how to conduct a lesson in an OBE fashion.

REFINE

With students today dubbed as the “21st Century Learner”, it has become an imperative that educators’ technological skills be at par with their students. This need was addressed during the last day of the in-service training when the participants were given the chance to “refine” their teaching methodologies from the traditional chalk and blackboard to incorporating interactive, multi-media strategies that are guaranteed to make learning more fun and meaningful.

Day 5

The fifth day of the training was entitled “Teaching with Technology”, which completely encapsulated the  topic of the seminar. Ms. Jennifer B. Escobar, MAT, Dean of College of Arts and Sciences and Nursing, introduced the resource speaker, Mr. Ernesto C. Boydon, MSCS.

Mr. Boydon imparted his expertise in using technology to enhance the teaching-learning process. He focused his discussion on how today’s technological advancements has impacted the way students learn and how educators can take advantage of these developments in making their everyday lessons more animated, interesting, and significant. He also shared interesting features of some computer applications and free sites that can provide useful programs that enhance lesson presentation.

As the five-day training drew to an end, Rev. Fr. Albert A. Pellazar, OAR, Vice-President on Academics gave his closing remarks. Ms. Melisaa B. Puti, MBA, Director of Student Affairs, served as the congenial host of the ceremonies and who formally closed the INSET 2014 for the tertiary level faculty.
