In support of Department of Education’s vision of Filipinos “who passionately love their country and whose values and competencies enable them to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to building the nation,” San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite (SSC-RdC) has embraced the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013. This bold step aimed at enriching the quality of education in the country addresses precisely, among other concerns, the issue of job opportunities for the youth. The new curriculum reduces jobs-skills mismatch and provide better preparation for higher learning.

Thus, after complying with the requirements of the DepEd, SSC-RdC was one of only four schools in Cavite City granted permission to offer Senior High School in 2016. On the basis of the interest of the learners, as indicated by the results of a series of surveys among the first batch of students who will enter the senior high school program, and of the available facilities and faculty competencies of the institution, SSC-RdC will be offering both the Academic and the Vocational tracks to interested students. All the faculty members prepared to handle technical vocational subjects have complied with Trainer’s Methodology requirements. Furthermore, among the schools in the city, only SSC-RdC has facilities and faculty for Home Economics courses, namely, caregiving, barangay health services, bartending, cookery, housekeeping, and bread and pastry production.

The mini hospital and skills for the BSN students will be perfect also for the students of caregiving, a short term TESDA course, which the school continues to offer. The registered nurses handling BSN subjects are also NC II certified both for caregiving and for barangay health services.

The kitchen, the dining and bar laboratory and the mini hotel plus the NCII certified faculty also allow the school to cater students who are interested to work in the hospitality industry or pursue a career in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

SSC-RdC has facilities and faculty to accommodate students who would want to have competency in SMAW NCI and NCII. The school once was the training institution from TESDA scholars who took these two certificate courses. The mechanical Engineering and the ECE laboratories are also prepared to welcome students who would want to finish Mechatronics, Automotive Technology and Electronics, respectively. Faculty members for these competency courses have also acquired NCs.

For those interested in business, the school has also prepared to offer Bookkeeping and Micro-financing, with at least three faculty members in Accountancy with NCIII.

Those who want to pursue competency courses in computer and information technology will also be welcome with the school having five computer laboratories and faculty members with at least NCII. Those interested in the arts may also pursue specialization in photography.

All these technical and vocational courses shall be embedded in the curriculum for the Academic Track courses, namely, STEM, ABM and Liberal Arts. The planning committee aims to have the graduates of all the tracks to acquire national certification from TESDA.

Reports from the DepEd in Cavite City indicate that many of the Grade 10 students from the public school are considering transferring to SSC-RdC to finish their high school on account of the availability of the tracks of their choice. Thus, SSC-RdC is preparing for the expected relatively big number of transferees from the public school especially because the DepEd will provide the tuition and other fees as provided under the government’s voucher program.
